BAREFOOT FOR BARE FEET
In 2011 Coach Dave Lay, the Boys' Basketball Coach, and I had the opportunity to attend the Legends of the Hardwood Breakfast in conjunction with the Final Four which was held in Houston that year. We knew that we would be in for a treat as we would get to hear from many greats in basketball as the event was centered around the Legendary John Wooden, "The Wizard of Westwood".
What we didn't expect to happen, was to hear Manny Ohonme speak about Samaritan's Feet. Manny shared his story and while we Coach Lay and I had heard about several colleges having Barefoot For Bare Feet games as service projects, we didn't know that it was something anyone could do. We left that breakfast with a vision to host a joint game during the 2011 - 2012 Season and to use this cause as our Service Project for the year. The people at Samiritan's Feet asked us to set a goal of $1,000 per program and with the help of the community we eclipsed that mark and raised $3,586, which put shoes on the feet of more than 350 individuals who have never worn them before.
This season, we are partnering with Stratford High School and holding our Barefoot For Bare Feet event at Don Coleman Coliseum on November 20, 2012. On that evening, the girls' and boys' basketball programs will play under the same roof again competing against a former district rival, but more importantly working with them to see how many lives we can touch; lives of people who we've never met.
Continue to check this page in the fall and we will have more information on how you can help contribute to this cause that we have decided to work with Stratford High School in during the upcoming season. Together we can make a difference.
